Scorpio New Moon Notes

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Okay, so, the New Moon is on my Neptune, so forgive me if I space out and miss the point entirely, but here goes. It’s exact at 24+ Scorpio at 19:14 UT. I wrote a little program to show local time zone equivalents which is here.

The Moon has its Fall in Scorpio. Traditionally a planet in its Fall would be considered to feel a bit “fucked up and far from home” in that sign, it’s the place where it’s least comfortable, and so where it can become insecure, defensive, frightened. In Scorpio, the style of dealing with this could well involve brooding, getting lost in the depths of emotion, analysing things to death, and perhaps deciding it’s safest to tear everything down and start again. These reactions are all about insecurity. This is definitely a time when “everything is a call for love,” however it may look.

The New Moon is exactly squaring Neptune in Aquarius, which therefore brings in Chiron and Jupiter which are still in conjunction with it. This is a reminder that, for the brave, all these deep feelings and reactions can have a spiritual/healing purpose. Scorpio is not afraid to feel its feelings, however scary they may seem, and Scorpio specialises in transmuting & transforming. Allowing yourself to feel things fully, watching without judgement, can result in them naturally passing through and healing; the only way round is through, what you resist persists etc. Gangaji offers an exercise for this, where you say “okay, despair, come.” It’s surprising.

This Moon also trines Uranus in Pisces (which is in mutual reception with Jupiter and Neptune in Aquarius), which again is an image of being deluged with water (emotion). Emotions are feelings in the body resulting from thoughts passing unbidden through the mind. They’re like weather.

We also have a mutual reception between the Sun in Scorpio and Mars in Leo, meaning this New Moon could also be viewed as a Moon-Mars conjunction in Scorpio. Feisty! My suggestion as usual is to be gentle with yourself and everyone else through this little storm, and to remember it will pass. Could well be a cathartic New Moon.

Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Cancer

Sun and Moon are now both in Yin water signs that understand one another very well. After putting our ideas out there under the Gemini Moon, the instinct is now to return to our shells a little bit, protect and nurture our loved ones and tune in to the feelings again. The signs alternate between Yin and Yang, and in that sense represent the wave-like flow of life – we have to reflect and take things in (Yin) before we’re in a position to put out what we’ve discovered (Yang), and then rest and reflect again, etc., in a neverending cycle. The sensitive, protective nature of the Cancer Moon works in harmony with the Scorpio Sun’s cautious / secretive side and kind of makes him feel safe. They are both open to experiencing their emotions, Scorpio very deeply, but the thing is not to push them, as both are liable to snap shut at the slightest sense of danger, and take whatever protective action is deemed necessary. So there could be some touchiness in the air, but only if you’re not gentle enough. A good day to be gentle with yourself and others, and to create a safe space to explore the feelings.

Sun in Scorpio Square Nessus in Aquarius

Nessus can manifest in many ways, but tends to have the themes of power, trust and the crossing of boundaries. It can show up as anything from a betrayal of trust, “crossing the line,” abusing a position of power – to crossing a previously accepted threshold and taking others with you, redefining what is possible. Yesterday we saw two examples, one in the U.S. and one in the U.K., of soldiers turning on and killing “their own;” they were able to ambush people precisely because they were trusted colleagues. Shocking betrayals of trust are a typical Nessus theme, as is the metaphor from the myth of injecting a poison in the process that leaves a foul stench that never goes away, i.e., abusing a position of power and trust has consequences that can last a lifetime for those involved, the thing continues to hang in the air. The Sun in the chart represents the “masculine” Yang principle – the will, the power to make decisions, and its squaring Nessus indicates a time when that power is likely to have consequences. Whether you believe free will is an illusion or not, decisions happen, and the decision to bring awareness to any process will affect it positively. Trust seems to be the issue of the day; trust is a decision, not a guarantee, and necessarily involves an element of letting go.

Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Gemini

As yesterday we have the bright, clever, sociable Gemini Moon combined with the deeply insightful but more secretive Scorpio Sun. On the surface they don’t really want the same things, but they can work together to use one another’s strengths – the potential is for brilliant wit with penetrating insight, the Gemini Moon providing a “socially acceptable face” to bring through Scorpio’s intensity. There’s also much potential for clever-sounding, witty, but deeply cutting remarks that feel good (Moon) at the time, but will be regretted later. Definitely watch the tongue today, especially as the Gemini Moon trines Jupiter and may be inclined to “say too much.”

Scorpio Sun Conjunct Mercury, Square Psyche in Aquarius, Opposite Asbolus in Taurus

The Sun’s conjunction with Mercury again emphasises the communication themes of the Gemini Moon mentioned above, and implies the Scorpio Sun’s willingness to “work with” (rather than against) it; i.e., both halves of the psyche are pretty much on the same page right now, there is a psychologically healthy congruence, a “together” feeling. Yet the square to Psyche and opposition to Asbolus provide some potentially productive tension. Psyche’s placement suggests the Sun is highlighting and tapping into a collective longing, with the Asbolus opposition perhaps representing some kind of anxiety about survival. This could for example indicate an awareness / receptiveness to the problem of climate change; now could be a good time to “get through to people” on such subjects, or for individuals (Leo, the empty leg of the T-square) to get involved.

Sun in Scorpio, Moon in Gemini

Combined with the Neptune station, the Gemini Moon is likely to allow inspiration to pour forth and be expressed, although the Scorpio Sun doesn’t really want her to give too much away.

Mars in Leo Trines Hylonome in Saggittarius: Art Therapy

The Yang creative impulse is strong right now, and can easily tune in to the primal scream (Hylonome); in particular, the one about some form of religious / philosophical / conceptual thought that unconsciously causes people to hurt themselves. All ideas are conceptual and none of them, however sacred, are ultimately the objective “Truth.” Hylonome can pick up everyone else’s pain from the ether and find herself unconsciously expressing it. While that process remains unconscious she will likely do this in ways that are detrimental to herself. So let there be no sacred cows today. This is an aspect that can be consciously used to write, paint, sculpt or otherwise creatively express yourself on the matter; to get it outside where you can see it rather than turning irrational guilt inwards. The idea is not to create perfection but rather to play and discover.

More on Hylonome here.

Neptune Stations Direct in Aquarius, Conjunct Chiron and Jupiter

Hard to tell the difference frankly. To Neptune, retrograde motion is just another powerful illusion. He is however at full strength at the moment, and his power lies in the fact that we don’t notice his deceptive effects. The collective is likely to believe anything around now; fog rules.
